LinkedIn today announced its annual Top Companies list with PwC taking Australia’s top spot, followed by KMPG, Westpac Group and The Commonwealth Bank.

The annual ranking highlights the most sought-after companies in top markets around the globe by professionals, based on proprietary LinkedIn data and billions of actions by over five hundred million LinkedIn members.

Almost a quarter of this year’s list incorporates new additions, ranging from blue-chip companies like CIMIC Group and BHP Billiton to property developer Scentre Group. Retail conglomerates such as Wesfarmers and Cotton Group also made the list, as did National Australia Bank.

LinkedIn’s director of talent and learning solutions, Jason Laufer, noted all new additions to the list for 2017 are Australian companies, reflecting Australian professionals’ desire to work for home-grown firms.

He added this year’s Top Companies all have a strong employer brand that is central to their recruitment.

“We know that a company’s culture and purpose are key drivers for attracting great talent, but also retaining employees,” he said.

“Companies that are developing and sharing content through their employees’ networks are actively demonstrating their employer brand to potential candidates.”

The LinkedIn data also revealed many of the Australian Top Companies have one thing in common — they reward their employees well.

Rewards ranged from birthday leave to wellbeing programs and an open dress code, sometimes extending to corporate cultures overloaded with perks and gifts in a bid to entice workers to stay with the company and grow within it.

While typical perks encompassed flexible working hours and parental support, some more interesting perks included:

  • PwC’s focus on flexibility and offers ‘floating public holidays’ which allows employees to pick whether they take state-based public holiday’s off, or choose another day instead.
  • REA Group’s space in their Melbourne office built for welcoming dogs so that employees could bring their pets to work on certain days.
  • CottonOn encourages their staff to take ‘Empower Hours’ so they can go out and do their own thing such as surfing before work.

Laufer said it is more than just company perks that differentiated these companies — professional growth is key to retaining top talent.

“They are also helping their employees transform by providing the opportunity to work on meaningful projects and creating an environment that encourages them to innovate and take intelligent risks,” he said.
